Ending to the roar of a standing ovation Gaga appears in time to rescue Tony. Where was “San Francisco”? It was the encore with Gaga off stage…and Tony selling his signature song. She too understood it was his night, lowering her ego to fit the mood and could not have been more generous.Īs the final curtain closed and a few inexperienced fans started to leave, most of us knew there was more. Yep, you realized that when Lady Gaga led the audience in Happy Birthday we were witnessing a career close to conclusion but 6000 of us just didn’t want to let on.Ī return of Gaga to finally join Tony created that opportunity to hear many of their classic duets. While occasionally the fullness of his voice was lost or the sustained note slipped in pitch it was only something our ears detected, in our hearts, it sounded perfect. Tony had moments of strong inflection that was always greeted with bursts of applause. The pianist was challenged by not wanting to limit the crowds ovation but one could sense he knew that Tony’s standing endurance could ill afford the stretching of the set.
TONY BENNETT LADY GAGA RAVINIA SERIES
The Orchestra conductor deferred to Tony’s personal pianist for timing cues and the intro into the series of hits Tony sang. It was Tony’s night, and we were there to thank him not for singing it tonight, but singing it for us for our lifetime. Even the President was often first to his feet to ensure we followed this new rule. Every song was ended to the applause of 6000 standing in ovation. It was at that point that we all knew what had to be done. With the lapse of just a few minutes, the sound system reproduces a recording of Frank Sinatra introducing what was undoubtedly a young Tony Bennet and with generous applause that builds to a standing ovation once the curtain clears to exhibit Tony standing at the side of the Piano, the place he would remain throughout the act with seldom a hand removed from that instrument providing melody and safety. It starts with a standing ovation and only builds from there as Gaga don’s a top hat for the reprise! Curtain down! I’m not sure you can witness better audience participation than when that song is sung/played in its hometown. Her opening act closed with her acknowledgment of finding herself where she had always been, New York, New York. Gaga’s opening half often referenced stories of her career and the influence and confidence that Tony Bennet had instilled in her ability to sing jazz and the classics from the American Songbook. Stage left & right and the slightly lowered orchestra pit were staged with multiple cocktail tables with audience members creating the night-club motif. Not a camera to be found!Ĭurtain up, and a 40 piece orchestra shared the stage with Lady Gaga’s combo of accompanists.
TONY BENNETT LADY GAGA RAVINIA FULL
The walk to his Row 3 seat captured everyone and crescendoed when he turned and waved to a full house. Only when the applause started from orchestra house left and surged Radio City like an acoustic wave did everyone realize President Clinton was being ushered in. Likewise, no one realized that the show started 35 minutes late, not because we had no phone to tell time, but because everyone was captured in that timeless pastime of conversation. A full house without a single nascent light distracting another audience member. The unique absence of iPhones placed everyone back in time, when Cole Porter and the Gershwin’s ruled without distraction. Tony Bennet stole everybody’s heart, and we aided and abetted! Guilty as charged. Some of your top performers on this list include Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Chick Corea, Patti Labelle, Tony Bennett (sans Lady Gaga this year), Bob Dylan and so much more. However, shortly after I realized snow was still on the ground. When they released the performers, I almost went into the closet to dust off the folding chairs and make a stop at the store to get some wine and cheese. On March 2, Ravinia provided what they promised.

Last year we were blessed with performances from Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Carlos Ravinia Festival is the oldest outdoor concert venue in the country (over century old), and even though we know it well, it can always surprise us. What’s that you say? The Ravinia Festival 2016 schedule was released!? Splendid.
